According to the school intervention protocol for students with type 1 diabetes,
He or she works with the school principal, nurse and parents to:
- Collaborer avec la direction de l’école, l’infirmière et les parents afin :
- D’encourager l’enfant à exprimer ce qu’il ressent en cas de malaise
- De reconnaître les signes et symptômes de l’hypoglycémie et de l’hyperglycémie, tel que déterminé au Guide d’intervention
- De reconnaître les situations qui nécessitent de joindre le parent et de communiquer avec lui
- Connaître et appliquer les consignes et les directives du Guide d’intervention
- S’assurer que l’élève qui éprouve un malaise est accompagné s’il doit se déplacer
- Informer les parents de la tenue d’activités hors de l’école
- Disposer en tout temps d’une trousse complète en cas d’hypoglycémie
- S’assurer que l’enfant dispose de sa trousse d’hypoglycémie au moment du départ de l’école
- Encourage the child to express how he or she feels when he or she is uncomfortable.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, as determined in the Intervention Guide.
- Recognize situations that require contacting and communicating with the parent.
- Know and apply the instructions and guidelines of the Intervention Guide.
- Ensure that the student who is experiencing discomfort is accompanied if he or she has to travel.
- Inform parents about out-of-school activities.
- Have a complete kit on hand at all times in case of hypoglycemia.
- Make sure the child has his or her hypoglycemia kit with him or her when leaving school.
