Type 1 diabetes and COVID-19: beware of easy conclusions

It is not possible to conclude that the coronavirus is responsible for an increase in cases of type 1 diabetes, contrary to what a very short study recently published by the medical journal JAMA Network Open suggests, warns a Quebec expert.

It is nothing new that type 1 diabetes manifests itself in the wake of a viral infection, whether it is the coronavirus or another virus, specifies Dr. Mélanie Henderson, who is pediatric endocrinologist at CHU Sainte-Justine.

Moreover, we see a greater incidence [of type 1 diabetes] in the winter months in Canada when respiratory infections are more frequent, she pointed out.

The study published by American researchers concludes that young people who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 were more likely than uninfected young people to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes one month, three months or six months after their infection.
