Happy Birthday Fred !

Participate in our calendar of actions for
our large community of T1D families

The Fondation Ressources pour les Enfants Diabétiques (FRED), proudly celebrates

50 years of commitment to families affected by type 1 diabetes.

Worldwide, 8.7 million people live with type 1 diabetes, and in Quebec, 4,000 children face this incurable disease. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, can affect anyone, including your children. Imagine living with this condition 24/7, for a lifetime. At FRED, we understand this reality, which is why we’ve set up support programs to break the isolation.

Type 1 diabetes requires one to several insulin injections a day. People with T1D need to calculate carbohydrates for each meal. It’s crucial to dispel the myth that diabetes is caused by excessive sugar consumption. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, while type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder. This distinction underlines the complexity of the disease and the need to raise public awareness. In Quebec, 120,000 people live with type 1 diabetes, and this figure continues to rise by 4.4% every year. The consequences of diabetes are alarming.*

FRED currently supports 2,820 families, welcomes over 160 new diagnoses each year, and offers 300 children an unforgettable experience at Camp Carowanis.

Help us continue our essential mission: to support the families of children with type 1 diabetes.

*This disease is responsible for 30% of strokes, is the leading cause of blindness, contributes to 40% of heart attacks, is involved in 50% of kidney failures requiring dialysis, and accounts for 70% of non-traumatic amputations of the feet and legs.
